New on DVD: David O. Russell returns with ensemble comedy 'Amsterdam'

The latest offering from director David O. Russell, his first film in seven years, tops the DVD releases for the week of Dec. 6.

"Amsterdam": Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington lead this star-studded romp through 1930s New York involving World War I vets, a wrongful murder accusation and a whole lot mishaps and mayhem.

"There’s a lot wrong with 'Amsterdam': the dull writing, its interminable 'busy-ness,' the dinner theater caliber of acting, the fact that the whole thing looks like it’s been soaked in tea," writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. "But worst of all it has a bad case of what one could call 'Don’t Look Up' disease, in which a film tries to exist solely on movie stars and a desire to lecture the audience about impending doom."
