New 'night time' covid symptom could indicate BA.5 omicron variant

We have had two years of listening to the latest health advice surrounding covid with many of us aware of the top symptoms to look out for.

According to the NHS this is still a fever, a new, continuous cough or/and a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.

However one symptom that people may not associate with the virus happens at night and it experts have said it could indicate that you have the virus, specifically the BA.5 omicron strain.

The symptom, as reported by Birmingham Live, is night sweats which can be common for many people due to a number of reasons. However when to comes to this specific variant, it could be a tell tale sign you've been infected.

Speaking about symptoms Simon Williams, of Swansea University, said: “Of the initially – or longer-established symptoms – of fever, continuous cough, and loss of smell or taste – only fever is currently still amongst the most common symptoms."

Professor Tim Spector, founder of the Covid Zoe Symptom Tracker App, added: “Symptoms [for Covid and a cold] are much the same except with Covid you are generally more fatigue and have sore throat - so best to assume it’s Covid.

“There are twice as many Covid cases as common colds – the ratio has never been so high,” he said. “Hopefully this wave will be over soon."

Symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) in adults according to the NHS:

  • A high temperature or shivering (chills) – a high temperature means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
