AC Milan are set to step up their interest in Naby Keita in a bid to lure the midfielder on a free from Liverpool this summer.
The Guinea international, 27, looks set to leave Anfield in a shake-up and is available on a Bosman as his contract is up. Italian giants AC Milan are keen despite the ace only showing glimpses of the player Liverpool signed from RB Leipzig in 2018 for £51.6million, which was a club record fee at the time.
Keita is now able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from last month onwards. Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to stand in his way as the ace has struggled with injuries in England, where he took Steven Gerrard’s vacant No.8 shirt upon his arrival.
Across all competitions, Keita has made a total of 127 appearances during his four-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield, scoring 11 goals.
But the midfielder has only managed two seasons where he has made 30 or more appearances in all competitions. Nevertheless, Keita has won six pieces of silverware on Merseyside, lifting the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, Club World Cup and Community Shield.
Pals say Keita might feel that playing in Serie A could suit his style more and a new deal at Anfield is yet to be firmed up despite speculation.
The Rossoneri have already added one former Liverpool player to their squad in Divock Origi and are now keen to add another.
The Belgian moved to Italy last summer on a free transfer but himself hasn't enjoyed the best of times at San Siro. The 27-year-old has scored just twice in 19 appearances so far, and has had to play second fiddle to ex-Chelsea and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud
