New music venue blasted by Lanarkshire locals after breaching decibel limit

A new music venue has been playing the wrong tune for Lanarkshire locals - after breaching their decibel limit.

Now Rutherglen and Cambuslang residents want the Junction 1 premises to turn the noise down after two weeks of loud gigs.

The new gigging hub is based in Oatlands in Glasgow, and has already hosted outdoor shows which can be easily heard from nearby areas.

Hundreds of complaints were sent to Glasgow City Council regarding the venue, and licencing chiefs found last Friday's performance by the indie dance band Hot Chip had breached the approved decibel limits.

A check the previous weekend, during a three day festival that featured the likes of Kelis and Groove Armada, was found not to breach the limit but that organisers agreed to turn down the level of the bass.

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey was among those who submitted a complaint regarding Junction 1, and told Lanarkshire Live she has had numerous constituents contact her about the noise.

She said: "“The noise from Junction 1 over the weekend was totally unacceptable, and the disruption needs to stop.

"At the weekend, I submitted a complaint to the Out-of-Hours Noise team at Glasgow City Council, and today I have requested meetings with their Licensing department and Junction 1’s owners.

"I have heard from constituents throughout Rutherglen and in Cambuslang, from as far as four kilometres away, who were impacted by the noise.

"With more concerts scheduled, including one for Wednesday August 17 – the date Rutherglen and Cambuslang children return to school after the summer holidays – the issue must be resolved."

A host of complaints regarding the noise have been made on social media in recent weeks, with some locals saying even with their windows shut they can hear every word being sung at the gig.

One local posted: Weekends I don't mind so much but on a Sunday night still going at 11pm? It was so loud."

Another added: "What the hell? Junction 1 taking the proverbial this afternoon and evening. Some of us have work in the morning. How is this allowed?

"Insane volume for being so close to residential areas."

Rutherglen South councillor Carol Nugent told us she has been contacted by scores of fed-up locals.

She added: "South Lanarkshire Council’s noise team monitored noise levels on the Friday and Saturday evening, and this will be followed up with Glasgow City Council.

"I hope that swift action is taken – out of hours noise complaints can be reported to the Emergency Out of Hours Service on 0800 24 20 24."

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “We received 120 complaints about noise from Junction 1 over Friday and Saturday last weekend.

"Our Environmental Health team attended the site on both nights this weekend to monitor levels and I can confirm that the organisers did breach their licence conditions on Friday night.

"Our officers instructed them to reduce the sound levels and they did so.

“However, a report will be submitted to licensing in relation to this matter and Environmental Health will continue to engage with venue organisers and internal partners in relation to the situation."

95 complaints were made the previous weekend.

Junction 1 have been contacted for comment.
