New Meta app Threads explained as Instagram-linked site to compete with Twitter

A leading technology expert has described Meta's latest app development, Threads, as the "first credible threat" to social media giants Twitter.

Matt Navarra, a social media consultant and industry analyst, said: "I think that Threads is the first real, credible threat to Elon Musk’s Twitter.

"Users of Twitter are desperately looking for an exit from the platform to escape, and the existing options of rivals are fairly limited.

"They all have the same big problem, which is you have to start from zero – it’s a network that is completely new.

"One of the biggest benefits for Meta is that it’s building off the back of Instagram, where people are familiar and can also kickstart their following because it ties into the same social graph."

But, what is this new development, linked to Instagram, that can rival the likes of Twitter - and when will it be released?

Read on below to find out more.

What is Threads?

Threads is a Meta development, and will become Instagram's text-based conversation application.

On the App Store, the new software is, "where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow.

"Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world."

You will be able to log into Threads using your Instagram handle, and the interface will be similar to how Twitter looks.

When will Threads be released?

According to The Verge, there has been a launch date teaser added to the original Instagram app.

If you type the word 'threads' into the search bar, a ticket icon will appear. Tap that, and a spinning ticket will pop up, including a launch time - which is 3pm on July 6.

Also on the supposed website for Threads is the same countdown and possible launch date.
