New measures to tackle 'awful' parking near school in Stapleford

Parking restrictions will be enforced near to a school in Nottinghamshire after complaints over ‘inconsiderate parking’. The restrictions will be put in place on Blake Road and Sisley Avenue in Stapleford as a way to solve the parking issues.

Nottinghamshire County Council will put single yellow lines along both sides of Blake Road and double yellow lines around the junction of Blake Road and Sisley Avenue.

The parking issues are said to have largely been caused by visitors to Fairfield Spencer Academy, which is on a nearby main road, Toton Lane. “They park anywhere to fetch the kids from school,” said Ann Townsend.

“We have a bus, The Shopper, and it often can’t get through. Blake Road for parking is terrible. School time is awful when you come around here.”

The 80-year-old made the point that there was a car park down the road, in Cliffe Hill Avenue, which parents could use as an alternative to park.

She said:“They park anywhere, I just hope it gets past. This corner here is absolutely horrendous, they fly down here. We’ve waited for it [the yellow lines] for a long long time.”

The single yellow lines will mean that vehicles cannot wait or park both sides of Blake Road with the path between 8am and 9.30am and 2.30pm and 4pm Monday to Friday.

Another resident who also uses the bus route on Blake Road says the bus service is often disrupted due to the parking. The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I can’t wait for them. If you come home on the bus during school times, it can’t get around.

“It just can’t get round, it’s terrible. They are putting in yellow lines soon, it’s about time. Hopefully it is soon, I’m so glad.”

John Brain, 75, added: “It’s difficult but it’s only for half an hour. I’m more bothered about the potholes. In the morning and evening it is a problem, I suppose it could pose a bit of a danger.”

A Highways Manager from Nottinghamshire County Council said: “Following consultation, plans are in place to introduce parking restrictions on Blake Road and Sisley Avenue in Stapleford, aiming to reduce inconsiderate parking which has caused access problems for local buses and residents.

“We are expecting works to be completed later this spring and will keep residents informed as to when the works are likely to take place.”
