Liverpool's first vegan Chinese chippy has opened its doors - and it has the Scousest name ever.
Woo Tan Scran is a plant-based chip shop on Lark Lane, next door to Keith’s Wine Bar.
It's the idea of Jay Baker, Tim Leah, Conrad Sharp and Alex Woo.
Alex told the ECHO: “I’ve always wanted to open a chippy called Woo Tan Scran because the name is hilarious. I never thought it was actually going to happen.”
The chippy sold out of food within hours during its opening weekend, forcing it to close earlier than planned.
Conrad said: “It’s been amazing, everyone has loved it. We had a soft launch weekend with no actual menu, just writing on the wall.
“We had no sign and just winged it a little bit. I didn’t even know how to wrap chips.”
Alex added: “We were all optimistic but we’ve just been blown away.”
People can get vegan versions of classic chippy food such as dumplings, spring rolls and ‘sausage’ dinner.
Alex said: “With Bundobust and Mowgli, places are doing brilliant Indian vegan food, but no-one was doing Chinese so we knew there was a gap in the market for it.”

He added: “It literally came from an idea and a pint. Three weeks later we viewed the property, bid on it and two and a half months later, here we are. It’s mad.”

The idea behind Woo Tan Scran was to keep it as a chippy.
Tim said: “There are plenty of places you can go to a Chinese sit-down restaurant and get decent vegan stuff but, there’s nothing like this where you just rock in on a Friday night when you’ve had a couple of pints, get a vegan Chinese meal and go home.”

Although some people are still getting used to the idea of everything being vegan, Tim said: “Whether you eat meat or not, it’s just nice scran.”
