New Little Mermaid trailer reveals first look at Melissa McCarthy as villain Ursula

Melissa McCarthy has been seen for the first time in her role of Ursula in Disney's upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

The 52-year-old actress is starring as the beloved villain alongside Halle Bailey in the leading role of Ariel.

In a new teaser trailer released by Disney to Instagram on Wednesday, 22-year-old Halle sings her version of Part of Your World as she swims past colourful underwater reefs and peeks out from behind a ship wreckage.

The video then cuts to Halle's character Ariel as she leans in to kiss Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King), but the clip fades out before they lock lips.

An evil laugh is then heard at the end of the film as Melissa appears as Ursula. Her big. bright eyes can be seen peeking out from behind one of her tentacles.

Fans went wild for the teaser trailer, with one person commenting: "The COLORS the VOCALS the CACKLE."

Another said: "I haven't been excited for a live action remake in a bit. I'm so excited to see this!"

"OMGGG URSULAS LAUGH I HAVE CHILLS," a third fan gushed while someone else commented: "@melissamccarthy the cackle," with a series of heart eye emojis.

The Little Mermaid remake is directed by Rob Marshall, with a screenplay by Jane Goldman and David Magee.

The new adaptation will once again see Ariel fall for a human prince who lives above the water, with her hopes of love being put at risk thanks to a devilish plot from Ursula.

As well as Halle and Melissa, the film also stars Javier Bardem as King Triton and the voices of Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian.

Broadway icon Lin-Manuel Miranda has teamed up with the original animated film's composer, Alan Menken, on the music.

Disney first announced Halle would be taking on the role of Ariel in July 2019. She said she has experienced racism after the casting was announced.

Thanking fans for their support, she said: "With all of the commentary and people's opinions going on, it just reminds me to be grounded and grateful that I have this opportunity."

Speaking on her YouTube channel, Halle added: "I know what it would've meant to me as a little girl to have been able to see a Black Ariel when I was younger.

"If I would've seen that, it would have changed my whole outlook on life. The fact that I’m getting to do that is really cool and unbelievable to me."
