New Lidl coming to Leeds as company eyes former gym site

A new Lidl may open in Yeadon as the company reveals its initial plans to expand into the Leeds town.

Lidl is currently holding a ‘Virtual Public Consultation’ on the plans for the new store, which would be located on Haworth Lane, on the site of the former DW Fitness Leisure Club. The store would be shorter than the current building, which, according to Lidl, means it would have a lower “visual impact” than the current vacant building.

According to the consultation, the plans would include tree planting and would help “bring a brownfield site close to the town centre back into use”. They would also put in place EV charging facilities and solar panels.

Proposals also include a 95 vehicle car-park, improved access and only one HGV delivery per day to minimise disruption. It is also hoped the new store would provide around 40 jobs to the local community with Lidl’s starting wages set at £10.10 per hour outside of London.

The store will have widened footpath access and will provide cycle parking at the front of the store. It will also be located near a bus stop on Queensway if the eventual application is successful.

There is currently no planning application in place, although Lidl says one will be submitted once the consultation is completed. You can access the consultation here.
