New Legoland to open - and £345million theme park will be its 'biggest in Europe'

A new Legoland theme park that is soon to be opened in Belgium will be the brand's biggest in Europe.

Lego fans will be thrilled to know that the colourfully themed resort is being constructed just across the Channel in Belgium, near Charleroi Airport, Merlin Entertainments Group has confirmed.

The incredible new site is set to be built on a former industrial zone and it's estimated that it will cost a whopping €400million (£345m).

It's thought that it will have on-site hotels like the UK version, and will cover an enormous 70 hectares – which is the equivalent of about 98 football pitches.

The UK Windsor park which is known and loved by Lego-lovers across the country is 61 hectares, by way of comparison.

Families will have to wait a little longer before checking it out for themselves, as the new theme park isn't due to open its doors until 2027.

It is worth noting that only a letter of intent has been signed, although full go-ahead for the project is expected by the end of the year.

There are reportedly plans to use another 20 hectares for further development closer to the completion date.

John Jakobsen, Merlin's COO for Legoland Resorts Group, said: "This is another exciting ‘building block’ laid for bringing a potential Legoland Resort to the many Lego Fans across Wallonia, Benelux and Northern France.

"We will continue to work closely with the Walloon Government and the City of Charleroi and our stakeholder partners at SOGEPA, SFPI and SORESIC to hopefully make this vision an awesome reality.”

The park would be the fifth Legoland in Europe, after ones in the UK, Germany, Denmark and Italy.

Legoland in the UK has successfully pitched itself as a family friendly theme park which boasts numerous large roller coasters and water rides decorated with themes for the Lego canon.

It also has plenty of sideshows, gentler rides and sideshows, including the famous lighthouse stunt show.
