New lease of life for Nottingham city centre street as apartments snapped up

Businesses are excited after a string of flats in Byard Lane in the city centre were taken over by new owners. The small yet busy city centre street is home to independent businesses such as the Everyday People restaurant, Coco Tang and Cubed hairdressers. It also features the high street brand Reiss.

There is just one remaining flat for sale above the row of businesses in Byard Lane, this is on sale for £225,000. The other three have already been sold, local businesses have said.

The newly converted apartments are over 950 square feet and have been recently converted by award-winning builders O' Keefe. Locals businesses said the sale of the flats could lead to a boost in footfall as tenants move in.

Dale Burchett, a barber at Cubed Cuts and Coffee said: "It will help the coffee shop side of the business as more people will call in before work for a drink. When it comes to the barber side, it might increase business a small bit but not really much difference because it's not an office block with more people. It's only a few people but it's slowly adding a little bit extra to the area."

Cate Lastarza, the supervisor at the coffee shop next door to Cubed, said: "It will be good for us and it's a nice thing. We've already met one couple that are going to be moving in and they come in as they love the coffee shop. It's custom for us and it means new neighbours."

The businesses are situated just off Bridlesmith Gate which has seen a resurgence in recent months as developers are revamping the area. Stick & Ribbon and jewellers, Keishi, have relocated from Cobden Chambers to the street opening brand new stores thanks to the lower rents.

Developer Arran Bailey has bought 11 properties locally with a view to 'making the street cool again." The increased footfall for Bridesmith Gate will no doubt also mean more for Byard Lane too.
