Special legislation will be introduced to the South Australian parliament to clear the way for construction of Adelaide's new women's and children's hospital.
The legislation allows for construction on the site of the existing police barracks, which includes some buildings that are heritage-listed.
Premier Peter Malinauskas said he hoped the government's bill would receive bipartisan support after its introduction in the upper house on Thursday.
"If we can pass this legislation through the parliament then it means we can get on with actually building this hospital as quickly as possible," Mr Malinauskas said.
"It is a massive investment. It will require years of construction, so the sooner we start, the sooner we'll have this facility online."
In September, the government revealed plans to switch to the barracks site, after ruling a location chosen by the previous Liberal government was too small.
It plans to spend up to $3.2 billion on the facility, which will provide more beds and treatment spaces and allow room for future expansion.
Building work is expected to start in 2024, with the hospital scheduled to open in 2031.
It will have 76 more beds than the existing facility in North Adelaide.
Mr Malinauskas said he appreciated that overturning heritage protections and using the barracks site would raise concerns for some people.
However, he said the government had chosen to prioritise the health care of children and their mothers.
