New Law Passed To Combat Campus Hazing

Haze shrouds Manhattan skyline in New York

The family of former University of Missouri student Danny Santulli, who suffered severe injuries during a fraternity hazing ritual in 2021, is celebrating the passage of the Stop Campus Hazing Act. This new law, signed by President Biden, aims to address and prevent hazing incidents on college campuses.

The bipartisan bill, introduced by Democrat Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, mandates that universities report hazing statistics annually and make this information easily accessible on their websites. Additionally, universities are required to implement anti-hazing programs to combat such harmful practices.

David Bianchi, the Santulli family attorney, emphasized the significance of federal intervention in the hazing space, marking a crucial step towards ensuring student safety.

The tragic incident involving Danny Santulli, who was left blind and paralyzed after a hazing ritual gone wrong, shed light on the devastating consequences of such activities. Santulli's family now provides him with round-the-clock care, highlighting the long-lasting impact of hazing.

Bianchi stressed the need for stringent punishments for individuals involved in hazing, advocating for immediate expulsion from universities and fraternities, as well as legal prosecution. He believes that harsh consequences are essential to deter students from engaging in harmful hazing practices.

Thomas Santulli, Danny's father, expressed the family's determination to push for 'Danny's Law,' which would grant immunity to students who report hazing incidents by calling 911. This proposed legislation aims to encourage prompt action in emergency situations and prevent further tragedies.

In response to the hazing incident at the University of Missouri, where 11 students were charged and Phi Gamma Delta was shut down, the Santulli family and their attorney continue to advocate for stricter measures to combat hazing on college campuses.

The passage of the Stop Campus Hazing Act represents a significant milestone in addressing the pervasive issue of hazing and promoting a safer environment for students nationwide.
