New Lanarkshire primary school will be shared campus for first year

Plans are in place for a temporary shared campus between two East Kilbride schools.

The new Jackton Primary School - being built as part of the huge EK Community Growth Area along with thousands of new homes - is due to open its doors to pupils this August for the start of the 2023/24 academic school year.

In a letter sent to parents/carers who have registered their children to attend the new Jackton PS, South Lanarkshire Council say that plans are being put in place for a shared campus with The Murray-based Our Lady of Lourdes PS.

The temporary arrangement would see a shared campus from August 2023 until June 2024 while a major refurbishment and extension of our Lady of Lourdes PS is ongoing.

And the correspondence from the local authority also states that they will be recruiting for a new head teacher for Jackton Primary, who they hope to have in place by this April.

However, the two schools will operate independently and will have their own staffing and management teams, with no plans for future decants to Jackton PS.

The letter reads: "At this time we would like to update you on our proposal to share the new building [Jackton PS] with Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School for the 2023/24 academic school year.

(EKN)

"Subject to approval by the Council’s Executive Committee on March 1, a major refurbishment and extension of our Lady of Lourdes Primary School will be undertaken.

"The internal and external upgrading of the school building would be extremely difficult to undertake with the school remaining within the existing building.

"In the first year of operation Jackton Primary School will only have a small number of classes, and will therefore have sufficient accommodation within the building to house both Jackton Primary School and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School.

"It is therefore proposed that Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School be decanted into the Jackton Primary School building from August 2023 until June 2024.

"The two schools will operate independently and will have their own staffing and management teams.

"After Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School returns to its upgraded building in summer 2024 there are no further plans to utilise the Jackton Primary School building for any other decants and the new school will have full use of the entire school building.

"Further discussions will be undertaken with the new Jackton Primary School interim Parent Council when it is established in the near future."

Delayed ground works began on the new Jackton Primary School last April.

Facilities at the primary school will be used for informal and formal use for the wider community with access being switched over from time to time to provide a mix of community use.

South Lanarkshire Council declined to comment further on plans at this stage.
