The Labour Party's newest MP was introduced to his constituents today after making the controversial decision to ditch the Conservatives.
Bury South MP Christian Wakeford announced yesterday that he would be defecting to the opposition following the recent scandal around parties held at 10 Downing Street.
He hit out at Prime Minister Boris Johnson and told his former Tory colleagues they were 'trying to defend the indefensible - and they are doing so gladly'.
Today, Mr Wakeford was joined by shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, while the head of Bury's Labour-led council introduced him to the public.
"There is one person here who you might not have been expecting, but it is certainly a real privilege to be able to welcome the newest member of the parliamentary Labour Party, Christian Wakeford, to today's event," Coun Eamonn O'Brien told the watching audience.
In his own speech, Mr Wakeford said it had been an 'interesting week', adding: "I don't know about you, but I think I could do with some more sleep".
He went on to say that he would be working with the council to 'build a better Bury'.
