Police make arrest after New Kent Road shut as man ‘scales Elephant and Castle flats’

Police arrested a man who “scaled” a tower block in Elephant and Castle forcing them to close the New Kent Road.

Officers closed the A201 New Kent Road in both directions while dealing with the incident at Albert Barnes House in Elephant and Castle - where the man was seen on an upper floor balcony.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “On Wednesday, 17 August, police conducting arrest enquiries attended a residential address in Albert Barnes House, SE1.

“A male at the address scaled the building in an attempt to evade police.

“He came down around 15:20hrs and was arrested. He remains in custody at this time.”

Video footage captured by a passer-by shows the man “sliding down” the tower block before appearing to enter a seventh-floor flat via a balcony door, as onlookers watched from the pavement below.
