New 'controversial' James Bond will be 'fresh and exotic', insists Amazon as MGM reboot begins

Amazon MGM has officially announced development of a new James Bond film, promising a "fresh, exhilarating and exotic new chapter”.

The new direction for the iconic spy franchise is in the hands of producers now working on the project in London.

The confirmation came during Amazon MGM's presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where studio executives revealed that producers Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and David Heyman (Barbie, Harry Potter) have begun work on the next 007 installment.

"We're committed to honoring Bond's legacy while bringing audiences something new and exciting," said Amazon MGM's Courtenay Valenti. "Amy and David are already hard at work in London developing this next chapter."

The announcement marks a significant transition for the franchise, following longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson's decision to step back from day-to-day involvement.

The pair remain co-owners of the franchise through a joint venture with Amazon MGM, which gained control of Bond rights through its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in 2021.

Pascal and Heyman said in a statement: "James Bond remains one of cinema's greatest icons. We're honored to help guide 007 into this new era while respecting everything that makes the character so special."

With production now underway, attention turns to the most pressing question: who will replace Daniel Craig as the new Bond?

While names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Henry Cavill and Idris Elba have been rumored, no official casting announcements have been made or any hint of when they will be.

The new film will be the first Bond installment since 2021's No Time to Die, which marked Craig's final outing as 007.

With the departure of. Wilson and Broccoli, the search for a new actor to portray the legendary superspy is intensifying.

Even Pierce Brosnan has revealed he would be “interested” in returning as Bond as the iconic spy franchise enters a new era.

he 71-year-old actor, who portrayed 007 in four films between 1995 and 2002 – GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, and Die Another Day – admitted the idea of reprising the role was “a rather romantic notion.”

However, he would love to step back into the spy’s shoes. “I’ve heard of that,” Brosnan told GQ when asked about the possibility of returning as an older version of Bond. “Of course, how could I not be interested?”

Reports suggest that 007 will undergo a significant transformation, taking the character back several decades.

Actor Daniel Mays said the franchise would return with a "very young" new star and an "origins" film.

During an appearance on the We’re Not Getting Any Younger podcast, he said: “Bond is a big deal right, that going to Amazon … I heard a rumour they’re going to cast someone very young and go sort of back to the origins.

“They’re going to sort of ’60s, you’re going to have all the retro cars and that sort of stuff — and start again. I think that would be kind of cool.”

Amazon MGM is reportedly planning a more expansive approach to the franchise, potentially including spin-offs alongside the main film series.

The news that Amazon has secured creative control of the James Bond franchise sent shockwaves through the fanbase and Hollywood alike.

Pierce Brosnan has said he’d happily make a return to the franchise

For years, the Broccoli family and Wilson have carefully guarded the 007 legacy, but with Amazon now at the helm, many fear the spy saga could face a future under corporate hands that prioritise content over craft.

"Quite possibly the worst thing to happen to this franchise," wrote film critic Griffen Schiller on X, reflecting the general dismay of many fans.

Casting and choosing directors were overseen by. Wilson and Broccoli, the children of legendary Bond producer Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli. Now that will be firmly in Amazon’s hands

As development on the reboot starts in London, fans can expect more details about the new direction for cinema's most famous secret agent in the coming months.
