New images reveal how ambitious Candleriggs Square project could transform Glasgow city centre.
Proposals would see the construction of a new hotel, build to rent apartments, office and business space, student accommodation, bars, restaurants, and shops in the heart of the Merchant City.
In November 2017, Glasgow City Council gave the green light for a significant development at the derelict site bordered by Wilson Street, Brunswick Street, Trongate and Hutcheson Street.

Following public consultation, new planning permission is being sought for the site, with 'Candleriggs Developments 2 Ltd' submitting proposals to the Council last week.
As stated within a letter sent to Glasgow City Council by Zander Planning Ltd, the application: "seeks a major mixed used development for the erection of a hotel and associated leisure/business uses - gym/cinema/event space, and business space/centre shops/retail (class 1), offices (class 2) and restaurants (class 3)/public houses (sui generis) together with associated access, landscaping, public realm, engineering/infrastructure works and demolition of [an] unlisted building.

"The proposals also include demolition of [an] unlisted building that will be subject to [a] separate Conservation Area application."
Meanwhile, documents, compiled by architects Stallan Brand, detail altered plans to the 2017 submission, with the belief the latest proposals 'improve permeability within the site, review the location of taller buildings to improve the site townscape impact, develop a contemporary architectural language that responds to Glasgow's distinct city centre character and provide a high quality public realm that can support a wide range of uses'.
Furthermore, it is hoped the construction will allow 'a range of roof terraces' to be provided, as well as courtyards and areas for cafe and restaurant seating within a central square.
There will also be opportunities for events to be held at the site, "enlivening the routes and spaces with dynamic range of temporary uses."

A Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) for the area was previously submitted to Glasgow City Council by joint developers Drum Property Group and Stamford Property Investments.
Welcoming the ongoing consultation process for the development, Graeme Bone, group managing director of Drum Property Group, commented in October: "There has been a lot of interest so far in the plans, with much positivity about our vision to transform what has become a neglected part of the city centre. We are now showcasing a variety of approaches to inspire the transformation of the site into a vibrant mixed-use community, which is set to complete the regeneration of Glasgow’s Merchant City.

"Our intention is to improve on the existing planning consents by making the development more accessible, welcoming and exciting for people living, working and visiting the area. Our plans will bring together high-quality housing, hotels, local amenities and open spaces with new pedestrian links throughout the site."
