New Hulu movies: the best films to stream in July 2024

Here's our selection of the five top picks of the best new Hulu movies you can watch on the streaming service this month:

Aliens

Main cast: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Carrie Henn, Bill Paxton
Director: James Cameron
Rotten Tomatoes score: 98% (Critics), 94% (Audience)

It's rare to find a sequel that might actually be better than the original. But there are many people (some of the TechRadar team included) who would argue that James Cameron's 1986 movie Aliens is a better watch than Ridley Scott's 1979 Alien.

In Aliens, Sigourney Weaver reprises her role as Ellen Ripley, the only survivor of an alien attack, which is the sole focus of the first movie. This time around, she's tasked with returning to the moon where her crew first saw the alien creatures. She's joined by a group of Marines to try and solve the mystery as to why a colony stationed there have suddenly gone silent. Although the clue is in the name of the film. Expect stellar acting, edge-of-your-seat tension and science-fiction horror at its finest.

If you're keen to get stuck into the rest of the Alien saga, do take a look at our guide of every Alien movie ranked from worst to best.

Get Out

Main cast: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones, Stephen Root, Catherine Keener
Director: Jordan Peele
Rotten Tomatoes score: 98% (Critics), 86% (Audience)

Get Out is a critically-acclaimed horror movie from director Jordan Peele. It was his directorial debut and he's since gone on to make several other successful horror movies, including Us and Nope. But Get Out is one of our most recommended scary movies of all time – seriously, it's one of those you'll be thinking about days after the credits have rolled.

It's impossible to share much about the plot of Get Out without giving too much away. It's filled with unexpected turns and shocking revelations, so be prepared. But, at least to start with, it's about a young black man called Chris (played spectacularly here by Daniel Kaluuya) who uncovers a dark and horrifying secret when he meets his white girlfriend's family. Needless to say this isn't family-friendly.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Main cast: James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, Jim Carrey
Director: Jeff Fowler
Rotten Tomatoes score: 68% (Critics), 96% (Audience)

As you can maybe guess from the Rotten Tomatoes scores above, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 won't win any awards for being a top movie. But it is one helluva fun watch that we'd recommend for the whole family, whether they're already fans of Sonic or not.

This action-meets-adventure-meets-comedy film is based on the famous video game series Sonic the Hedgehog and it's the sequel to the original Sonic the Hedgehog movie that came out in 2020. It follows on from the first movie after Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) has defeated Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and banished him to the mushroom planet. But he returns with a new partner, Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), to find an emerald that'll destroy everything and everyone. Sonic and Tails must set out on an adventure to find it first.

Source Code

Main cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright
Director: Duncan Jones
Rotten Tomatoes score: 92% (Critics), 82% (Audience)

Source Code is an incredibly thrilling science-fiction movie that'll keep you glued to the edge of your seat. Directed by Duncan Jones (famous for another exceptional sci-fi movie, Moon), it follows the story of Captain Colter Stevens (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) of the US Army who must complete a virtual reconstruction of a train explosion to identify who the terrorist responsible is.

Like Get Out above, the less said about how the plot unfolds, the better. This is one highly complex and smart science-fiction movie that'll keep you guessing with exceptional performances from Gyllenhaal in the lead role and Michelle Monaghan as Christina alongside him.

13 Assassins

Main cast: Koji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada, Yusuke Iseya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Hiroki Matsukata, Mikijirō Hira, Gorō Inagaki, Masachika Ichimura
Director: Takashi Miike
Rotten Tomatoes score: 95% (Critics), 88% (Audience)

It's rare for a remake to be more successful than its original material, but the 2011 version of 13 Assassins proves it sometimes does happen. Set in 19th century Japan, the film is based on real-life events and it's packed with stunning action and plenty of violence. Which is to be expected as it has highly-acclaimed Japanese director and producer Takashi Miike at the helm, known both for his skilful directing and graphic violence.

The film follows the story of a a team of assassins led by Shinzaemon Shimada (played by Koji Yakusho). They attempt to fight Lord Naritsugu Matsudaira (Goro Inagaki) to prevent him from terrorizing his own people. The assassins set traps for his bodyguards and enlist the help of one of the best samurais in the country. Expect fascinating history, a wild action spectacle and an epic battle scene that lasts around 45 minutes.
