New House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris To Focus On Spending

Republican Maryland Rep. Andy Harris

New House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., has outlined his priorities for the remainder of the year, focusing on government funding and next year’s House GOP Conference rules. Harris, who has been a member of the Freedom Caucus since its inception, expressed his commitment to advancing conservative agendas in Congress.

Harris emphasized the importance of controlling spending and shaping the rules for the upcoming Congress. He pledged to actively engage in addressing these critical issues, stating, 'I'm going to roll up my sleeves and battle those two issues.'

Following Rep. Bob Good's departure from the role, Harris was elected to lead the Freedom Caucus for the remainder of the year. Known for his reserved nature with the media, Harris's selection aligns with the group's preference for discretion.

The Freedom Caucus, recognized for its advocacy of conservative policies, has often challenged House GOP leaders to pursue more stringent measures. Despite this reputation, Harris commended Speaker Mike Johnson's leadership on government funding, particularly in relation to a proposed six-month extension of federal funds.

While the plan includes a provision requiring proof of citizenship in the voter registration process, it faces opposition from the Democrat-controlled Senate and the White House. Harris refrained from detailing strategies to ensure the plan's approval but encouraged GOP critics to reconsider their stance before the vote.

Regarding potential changes to House GOP Conference rules, Harris hinted at discussions within the Freedom Caucus. With leadership elections approaching, the issue is expected to be a focal point for the end of the year. Harris expressed optimism for further modifications to the rules, building on adjustments made during the current term.

As the incoming chairman, Harris emphasized the collective decision-making process within the Freedom Caucus, indicating that any proposed changes would be subject to group consensus. He anticipates robust deliberations in the coming months to shape the future direction of the House GOP Conference.
