New homes planned for leafy Nottinghamshire street

Residents have shared their thoughts on the proposal of new houses on a leafy street in an affluent Nottinghamshire area. Plans have been submitted to Broxtowe Borough Council for 10 dwellings off the back of land in Bramcote Drive, Beeston.

The application site, which covers 0.99 hectares of land, is situated between Bramcote Drive and Beeston Fields Golf Club. The development will include 10 two-storey houses and garages, highways, drainage and landscape infrastructure.

The site does not lie within a conservation area, but residents say they enjoy looking out at the trees opposite, and appreciate the wildlife the vegetation brings. The planning proposal states that "the majority of the mature trees along Bramcote Drive will be retained and new shrubs and smaller trees will be planted along the boundary with Bramcote Drive."

Now residents have weighed in and said they agree with the plans as long as the trees are maintained. David Polkey, 64, a retiree living opposite the proposed development said: "I think the trees will be protected, we were relieved when they said they weren't going to cut the trees down.

"We have heard rumours about it happening, but there's a twitchell in the area that's used as a walking route by a lot of Beeston and also school kids too. His wife Sue, 60, added: "We've been living here 26 years. We're not as bothered if they keep the trees but we do have some concerns about access."

Another local resident added: "We do value the trees, but we do want them maintained. If it's done sensibly, I can understand the logic of it.

"If the houses are behind the trees like they are in the plans, then why not? We have some questions about the access road but the plans seem to be well thought through.

"If everything's taken on board, then I can see there will be some very sought-after dwellings near us." Two points of access onto Bramcote Drive have been proposed in the plans., each serving five dwellings.

Gary Thomas, 56, a retiree living in Bramcote Drive echoed the thoughts of other residents. He said: "I think I'm okay with it. The houses will be behind the trees.

"If it's done like the ones near Wollaton Road, I mean we still need houses so I understand the need to build." Nick Tsioupra, a 28-year-old pilot living in Bramcote Drive added: "I don't actually know about it. I won't have a big problem if it's behind the trees, we like looking out on the trees.

"But I'm going to have a closer look at the plans now and see."
