Here's What's Inside The Dusty Divot Meteorite In 'Fortnite: Battle Royale'

Fortnite: Battle Royale

It might not be quite as dramatic as when it was hurtling towards the map in Season 4 of Fortnite: Battle Royale, but the meteorite that crashed into Dusty Divot continues to yield secrets. For weeks now, little robot arms contained within the research facility have been drilling it open: there wasn’t much progress at first, but a little while ago we got a glimpse of whatever was inside of it. Now, however, the thing is busted more or less wide open, and we can get a much closer look at the thing in the middle. Here’s what we’ve got:

Fortnite: Battle Royale

For one thing, you’ll notice that whatever is in there has started glowing red, a sure sign that it is mysterious, awesome, evil, or some combination of all 3. It’s a little unclear just what’s in there, but to me, it looks like a satellite, something not unlike the orbital probe glider that pairs with the Leviathan skin. My colleague Paul Tassi responded only with “Megatron,” saying it looked like an evil robot. Either would make sense with the whole “it came from outer space” concept.

The comet was the big narrative piece of the map in Season 3. It started out small and got bigger over the course of the Season, eventually raining down meteorites that soon began to crash to the ground and destroy structures. When it finally landed it broke Dusty Depot into Dusty Divot, and now it’s sitting inside this government research facility.

This meteorite is the closest thing we have to a constantly evolving piece of the map in Season 4, at least so far. It’s not quite as dramatic as the comet, however, which remains a stroke of genius. The speculation here is a little to broad, and the possible effect on the game a little too opaque. That’s what was great about the comet: it was right there in the sky for everyone to see, and it was clearly building up to some sort of impact, though people had no idea when or where. This satellite thing could really be anything, and so it’s a little bit harder to speculate on just what it will be.

We still have five more weeks in the season, though, and it’s possible that Epic is going to amp up these story elements once we finish out the seven Blockbuster challenges that comprise a little narrative of their own. There’s also a mysterious hatch in Wailing Woods and two superhero lairs to contend with, so anything is possible. There is that rocket hanging out, and who knows what happens with that.
