Edinburgh gets 'mega' Greggs in city centre as bakery giant seeks new staff

A huge new Greggs store is set to open in the city centre and is looking for new staff.

On the corner of Castle Street and Rose Street, locals have spotted work being done on a store. The building is cordoned off by barriers as workmen prepare the premises to be filled with the likes of sausage rolls.

The outside of the store has been painted grey, matching the rest of the bakeries, and the Greggs logo can be seen printed on the glass. A poster advertising jobs has also been stuck to the window.

In the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, the bakery giant is taking over the spacious former Darnley’s Gin premises in 19 Castle Street. It can be seen that the building has not been significantly changed, apart from the windows and paint. Prior to the gin shop, TSB Lloyds bank used the space.

This comes after Greggs announced a list of new bakeries opening across the UK in 2023, confirming that it plans to open 150 new shops a year, adding to its 2,330 portfolio in the UK already. In 2022, they opened a record 186 new stores alone

Plans were also announced for a new 24-hour Greggs drive-thru, which is set to be trialled at an unconfirmed location later this year. The chain has been extending its opening hours in recent months to sell more hot meals in the evening, with around 500 of its stores now open until at least 8pm and plans for a further 300 to stay open until 9pm this year.
