New Glasgow Stockingfield Bridge launches with light spectacle for communities

The brand new Stockingfield Bridge in the north of Glasgow has officially launched with a spectacle of light.

The foot and cycle bridge built over the Forth and Clyde Canal connects the three communities of Ruchill, Gilshochill and Maryhill.

Its structure is a curved design with a viewing platform and the main foundation pile sits on the east bank at Ruchill sweeping north to Gilshochill and south to Maryhill.

The new £14m crossing allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross the canal at towpath level rather than having to exit the towpath to use a potentially dangerous road tunnel, before rejoining the canal towpath again.

Now, the bridge has had its grand opening with members of the community coming out for the celebratory light display and procession, led by Glasgow-based art group, Carnival Arts.

As well as the light show, the entertainment included music and fire performers on the waters of the canal.
