New Glasgow restaurants, bars and cafes to visit this summer

The summer is here - or so we're told - even if the weather clearly hasn't got the memo yet.

However, that's all due to change soon (surely) meaning we can get outdoors and try some of the city's best beer gardens and roof terraces.

But it's not all about outdoor spaces when it comes to food and drink in Glasgow this summer. There's a whole host of new restaurants, bars and cafes to get excited about.

With our last round-up published in spring, our latest guide to all of the city's new openings features over 30 new dining and drinking spots including gastropubs, bakeries, Indian restaurants, seafood spots, pizza places, coffee cafes... we could go on!

Here's everything you need to know about the latest openings - and what's coming soon.

New openings:

Rickshaw

The doors to Glasgow's latest Asian restaurant are now open, with the Partick eatery promising a modern take on street food 'straight from India and Bangladesh'.

Sat in the heart of Partick Bridge Street, the venue replaces what was Hyde cocktail bar.

Split over two floors, there's a 120-cover restaurant mezzanine, outside terrace and a café bar area. More importantly, the menu boasts small plates, tandoori grills, biryanis, salad bowls, wraps, tiffin boxes and larger curries.

Scamp

Glasgow's latest seafood restaurant, Scamp, has recently opened in the city centre.

Behind the exciting new venture are the team who run the hugely popular Eighty Eight and Hooligan in the city's west end.

Scamp will specialise in tapas-style seafood small plates, with owners commenting: "The menu, designed to be shared tapas-style, focuses on local, seasonal ingredients and quality flavours. Dishes include langoustine scampi with lemon and chipotle ketchup, BBQ spiced monkfish on the bone with bhuna sauce and sea bream ceviche with strawberry and elderflower dashi."

Whistler by the Green

Glasgow has a new gastropub with the arrival of Whistler On The Green.

Situated on Greendyke Street, looking onto Glasgow Green and occupying the former Whistlin' Kirk bar, the food and drink venue recently opened its doors. Owners describe the venue as a 'new local bar and eatery specialising in fine food and great drink.

The bar will be serving breakfast, lunch and evening bites, with the menus to be gradually introduced over the next week. Punters can order alcoholic drinks with their breakfasts from 8am, from Tuesday to Friday.

Fat Lobster

Located in the former home of the much-loved Mussel Inn on Hope Street - which closed its doors during the pandemic - Fat Lobster, from the team behind popular city centre drinking den Tabac aims 'to bring a relaxed, refined and diverse approach on seafood to the city centre'.

The team told Glasgow Live: "Our head chef is inspired by many different things from all walks of life, one of his main inspirations being the South West of France and their casual approach to dining. With his travels and his impressive catalogue of kitchen stunts combined, we believe we have really created something special and unique, to be enjoyed by everyone."

But it's not just about the seafood, with a diverse drinks offering being one of the big attractions at Fat Lobster.

Scallop's Tale

The Scallop's Tale has arrived in Bearsden, boasting an extensive dine-in and takeaway menu, packed with locally sourced fresh seafood dishes and fish and chip shop favourites.

The two-level Bearsden restaurant has a distinctly nautical feel to its impressive interior, which features traditional dark wood panelling and brass fittings set against a deep blue colour scheme which offers a ‘refined family dining experience unlike anything in the surrounding area’.

The exciting restaurant and takeaway menus have been devised by executive chef Stephen Pohler, who has built an impressive CV including spells at the Lisini Dalziel Park Hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn, Crowne Plaza and the Radisson Red, in Glasgow.

Wunderbar

Glasgow city centre has welcomed an interesting new bar which will be home to over 100 beers from across the world.

Wunderbar, a bier bazaar and cocktail palace, has opened at the former Bread and Butter bar on Buchanan Street promising to be 'your friendly neighbourhood local slap bang in the centre of the city'.

Alongside the extensive beer selection, the likes of hot dogs, nachos, chicken wings and loaded fries are being served up from the kitchen.

The Last Rodeo

Billed as 'your friendly neighbourhood bar', the new joint on Pollokshaws Road is serving up Tex Mex inspired scran, cocktails and frozen margaritas.

If that wasn't enough, they are also setting tongues wagging with Mariachi El Brunch - their full weekend brunch menu featuring breakfast burritos, tacos, home fries and a family recipe 'huevos bastardos'.

Yakitori Shack

Southsiders are celebrating the arrival of a beautiful new yakitori shack that popped up in Shawlands for the first time this weekend, which serves 'hand-picked local produce brought to life over Binchotan charcoal from Japan'.

Appearing at the site of the excellent Park Lane Market - which we featured recently on Glasgow Live - those lucky enough to try the new traditional-looking BBQ skewer spot have raved about it, with social media abuzz with pictures of delicious looking Japanese cuisine.

Smokey Trotters Kitchen

The sensational Smokey Trotters Kitchen has opened in a new location.

Famed for their stacked burgers and sandwiches, nuggets, wings and fries, Smokey Trotters Kitchen has been a household name on the street food circuit for a number of years, having appeared at pop-up spots across the city.

Having opened their first permanent spot in the east end last year, Smokey Trotters Kitchen has now come west, with their mouthwatering scran available on the Finnieston Strip on Argyle Street.

Sano

Glasgow's latest pizza place Sano has opened on the Finnieston strip.

The new venue is a UK first for Sano, which has two pizza restaurants in the Republic of Ireland.

Their pizzas are made the Neapolitan way, with the founders explaining on their website the story of how Sano began when they took a trip to Naples.

The Thai

Glasgow has welcomed a new Thai restaurant with the arrival of The Thai in Shawlands.

With chefs who have 'worked all over the world in the finest Asian restaurants', The Thai is serving traditional Thai cuisine from the former home of Japanese eatery Koku Shi at 317 Kilmarnock Road.

This new food spot first opened for takeaway, with their sit-in offering now open too. Introducing a 'semi-fine dining' setup, the menu features lobster, Aberdeen Angus steaks, lamb racks, fish fillets and tuna steaks served on a hot stone grill.

Big Licks

A popular Glasgow ice cream shop famed for its instagrammable eats and huge social media following has a new store outside the city.

Big Licks has been a huge hit with locals, serving colourful ice creams, shakes and desserts from its cafe on Finnieston Street.

And in May, Big Licks opened up at another location, near Braehead, replacing the former Denny's store.

Grillaz

A new drive-thru burger restaurant in Glasgow is gaining a lot of attention after appearing in a TikTok video that has been viewed thousands of times.

Grillaz, a new "flame grilled drive thru" on Springfield Road, has been praised for its "extensive" menu and "massive portions", with a Classic Grillaz Burger Meal Deal, with fries and a soft drink, costing £11.95.

Heavenly Desserts

Silverburn shopping centre has a new eatery offering indoor and outdoor dining for up to 100 customers in the shape of Heavenly Desserts.

With 38 stores across the UK, their extensive menu consists of artisan desserts "made with love". Think waffles, milkshakes and cookie dough, and even warm apple doughnuts with spiced custard and pistachio milk cake.

There are vegan and gluten free options too, so all Glaswegians can tuck into the sweet treats, no matter their dietary requirements.

Scomelette

Cafe and bakery Scomelette has opened its doors on Victoria Road just along from Queens Park, serving up their signature scomelette dish alongside baked goods and tea and coffees.

We think it may be related to the same 'scomelette' that chef Imran Haq created back in 2017 at Creme Cafe and Dessert Parlour on Wallace Street - a dish that proved to be a big crowd pleaser with visitors.

Billed as the 'ultimate hangover curer', the dish is made up of a traditional Scottish potato scone which has been given a spicy twist with the addition of an Indian style omelette on top.

Funky Monkey

A newly-opened Glasgow city centre food spot aims to 're-introduce crepes to the British public', the Greek way.

From the team behind the brilliant Pie Pie on Broomielaw comes the fantastically-named Funky Monkey, on Queen Street.

After opening three years ago, Pie Pie has built quite the reputation for its delicious coffees and heavenly Greek pies.

And now they have brought the best of Greek cuisine to the heart of Glasgow, specialising in crepes.

Taco Mazama

Taco Mazama has opened its brand new Glasgow food joint right in the city centre. Its much-loved burritos, fajitas, tacos and margaritas are now being served up in Sauchiehall Street.

The Californian-Mexican eatery already has two other outfits in the city; nearby Renfield Street and further west in Byres Road.

The bright and colourful restaurant and takeaway sits near the junction with Garnet Street, across the road from Tuk Tuk Indian Street Food.

Elixir

The city has welcomed a shisha lounge and restaurant providing a 'premium' offering, serving up the likes of wagyu beef burgers.

Elixir's customers can enjoy premium flavour shisha, mocktails, hot drinks and burgers 'like they've never been done before'. Using wagyu beef and Aberdeen Angus, all meat is halal, catering to a wider audience.

The food menu also includes the likes of smash burgers and desserts such as cookie dough, waffles, pancakes, gelato, sundaes.

Hinba

Hebridean coffee makers Hinba have opened their first cafe in Glasgow following on from the success of their shop in the west coast of Scotland, in Oban.

Their beloved coffee, which is roasted on the Isle of Seil, is now available to caffeine-daft Glaswegians on 86 Dumbarton Road.

Known for first class coffee pours, baked goods, empanadas and delicious sandwiches, westenders have been popping by Hinba in recent weeks.

Caffe Stazione

Braehead Shopping Centre has a new coffee spot, located between the centre's Marks and Spencer and Poundland.

Having first teased the opening last December, Caffe Stazione is now serving up "speciality street coffee" and operates out of a small tuk tuk-style van with its own coffee machine.

Cranside Kitchen (reopening)

Cranside Kitchen's Summer Garden is back and open for business.

Cranside Kitchen sits on the banks of the Clyde in Finnieston just a short from walk the OVO Hydro (Connor Grant)

The outdoor drinking, dining and entertainment venue, just a hop, skip and a jump from the OVO Hydro, promises to be better than ever. Palm trees, garden picnic tables and benches, and a beach hut Tiki style bar have been added to the three outdoor areas.

A giant 'Aperol Tuscan Tree' overlooking Glasgow's iconic Finnieston Crane is the perfect posing spot for all those summer snaps with friends. The new Terraza Di Aperol and Walled Gardens are new for 2022 while the Sugar Hut Bar's new watering hole serves punch bowls, cocktail slushies, and tropical fruit juices.

Sweet Jane Bakery (reopening)

To the delight of Dennistoun residents, the hugely popular Sweet Jane Bakery has reopened after being taken over by a new team.

Brother and sister duo Allan Cuthbert and Lynn Stevenson have given much-loved neighbourhood bakery a new lease of life, after it was announced at the start of May its current owners were moving on to pastures new.

The beautiful bakehouse has retained the same name, look and feel - and even the same bread recipe, as well as a few new twists on the old Sweet Jane classics.

Civerinos

A hugely popular Edinburgh pizza favourite is coming to Glasgow, with news Civerinos Slice is bringing two new restaurants to the west.

Famous in the capital for their wood fired pizzas and modern Italian street food with secret classic family recipes passed down through generations, Civerinos has spent eight years running the game in Edinburgh from its four venues.

The team behind Edinburgh’s original New York Italian inspired, neon-lit hang-out have announced that they are set to open two new Slice venues in Glasgow in the coming months.

Stailinn

Silverburn shoppers will soon have the option to tuck into delicious Scottish cuisine when they want a break from the sales after confirmation a new restaurant is coming to the centre.

From the Ayrshire hospitality chain behind the likes of popular restaurants The Drunken Coo Steakhouse, Hollybush Inn, Arthur Street Kitchen and Stage Door Cafe comes the Stailinn Scottish Kitchen, which is due to welcome in customers later this summer.

Stailinn will occupy unit 72b in Silverburn, above the newly opened Heavenly Desserts.

Tantrum Doughnuts

The team behind arguably Glasgow's best doughnuts have announced they're opening a new shop in the south side of the city.

You've no doubt delved into one of Tantrum's delicious doughnuts at either of their west end or city centre sites. Soon there'll be a third location for Glaswegians to get their sugar fix.

For those who have been in the south side of the city in recent days, you'll have noticed the Tantrum sign has appeared at a unit on Minard Road, near Shawlands Cross.

Burnfield Bakery

A new coffee shop and bakery is set to open this summer, with the news two of the best names in the Glasgow coffee scene have decided to team up.

With work already underway at 717 Pollokshaws Road in Strathbungo, former home of the popular Seven One Seven grocery and deli, Burnfield Bakery will open in the coming weeks.

Short Long Black, which has also brought us the hugely popular Patricia's brunch haunt just down the street on Victoria Road, is one of the south side's most in-demand coffee shops and continued to serve takeaway coffees to local residents throughout the pandemic.

Eusebi's Deli new bakery

An iconic Glasgow eatery has announced its expansion with the arrival of an exciting new cafe and bakery in the city's west end.

Due to open in the University of Glasgow’s recently opened, state-of-the-art ARC (Advanced Research Centre) the new café and bakery will offer a ‘light’ version of Eusebi’s Deli's hugely popular Italian food and drink offering.

From the team behind the Park Road favourite, a stone's throw from Kelvingrove Park, Eusebi’s Café & Bakery will initially open to both the public and the University community from Monday to Friday.

Malaga Tapas

Malaga Tapas is opening a second restaurant in Glasgow this summer.

Bosses are keeping the new location under wraps for now (Google Maps)

The Spanish eatery already has one popular venue in St Andrews Road in the south side, with the family-business first opening its doors over a decade ago.

Bosses have now confirmed that the tapas bar will be expanding to a second venue to offer the classic Spanish dishes elsewhere in the city.

Off The Rails

Off the Rails is on track to open outside Queen Street at the former home of Cafe Nero on Dundas Street.

Unfortunately we don't know much more than that – as the coffee roasters are so cool they've yet to make any announcements on social media.

Indeed, apart from the colourful red signs outside proclaiming "fresh roasted coffee never tasted so good", Off the Rails appear to be keeping the news of the opening to themselves for now.

Kaffateria

Just next door, a new cafe and event space is preparing to open at the site of iconic city centre pub The Value.

The Vale, which sat opposite the entrance to Queen Street Station on Dundas Street, had a loyal following of punters before having to close for the Queen Street redevelopment works in 2016.

Now, the Dundas House premises is being converted into a new coffee shop and event space, Kaffateria, which will serve 'locally roasted coffee, Glasgow-brewed craft beer and casual food to-go.

Frosoulla's

Frousoulla's in Battlefield is back after being closed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Greek food joint recently revealed their comeback, but only for the Ed Sheeran shows at Hampden on June 16 and 17, with a set menu.

However, they've since confirmed they are back for good, 'with Mediterranean influences including French and Italian joining Greek food on the menu'.

Yeros

The city will soon have another Greek food spot with the arrival of Yeros. The new eatery will serve up Greek street food 'in the heart of Glasgow' at a location in Finnieston.

Announcing the venture recently on social media, the team behind Yeros say they will be 'opening soon', teasing the Gyros they will soon be serving up to Finnieston foodies.
