Gardai have issued advice to the public after a large amount of cash was stolen.
The advice relates to bank transactions and comes after a theft in Offaly over the weekend.
Edenderry gardai are investigating the incident which saw a substantial sum of money stolen in and around Edenderry Town Centre on Saturday between 1 and 2pm.
A Garda spokesperson said: "Notes of €500, €200 and €100 were included in the amount stolen and may be tendered locally. A wallet was subsequently recovered with the monies missing near the Bus Stop at O'Connell Square. If you can assist in our investigations please contact us on 0469731290 or 057 932 7600."
This has led gardai to issue new advice to the public about what they need to be aware of when dealing with cash.
They said: "If you are carrying out cash banking transactions please take the following general advice:
- Be aware of your surroundings, especially if something seems strange as you enter the bank.
- Conceal your bank deposit bags, coin boxes or envelopes as you enter and leave the bank.
- Take your bank bag or envelope with you into your next destination. Don’t hide it in your vehicle.
- Always vary your routes and times for cash drops and collections.
- Consider using electronic funds transfer rather than depositing or withdrawing cash.
- If you feel like you are being followed, call 999 and drive to a Garda station."
