New flats could be built on car park surrounded by historic Nottingham buildings

A Nottingham car park surrounded by historic buildings could be turned into flats. The car park at the back of St James' Street in the city centre could be turned into 11 apartments if Nottingham City Council approves the fresh proposals.

The new block would consist of one and two bedroom apartments accessed off a central staircase, with access to cycle parking and waste storage. The site is currently used as a car park, but developers have argued the space is "under-used".

The site sits within the Castle Conservation Area, where there are 50 listed buildings, including several located adjacent to the proposed development site. Due to its location, an archaeological assessment is likely to be required, according to the site's prospective developers.

The project's applicants said the block would fit in with its immediate surroundings. They added its appearance would aim to "work with the existing listed buildings, not to mimic but to complement and enhance."

In a planning document, Zenith Planning and Design, on behalf of OJ Property Sourcing and Development Ltd, said: "These proposals will regenerate this area and provide a long-term sustainable use for the existing under-used carpark. The scheme will provide high-quality, energy efficient accommodation for future residents based close to the city centre. The buildings will provide a secure and inspiring environment for the residents.

"The layout and design of the proposed development respects the neighbouring houses and the conservation area. The design allows for the future development of the lower car park, giving the opportunity to reinstate the historical ribbon development of the site.

"Therefore the development will greatly enhance the appearance and character of the area." The planning application is pending consideration by Nottingham City Council.
