New film Beats is out in cinemas today - everything you need to know

Beats has finally hit screens after months of drumming up hype among film and music fans in Glasgow.

The Scottish rave culture movie, based on the award-winning play by Kieran Hurley, has garnered glowing reviews after its world premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival back in March.

Directed by Brian Welsh (Black Mirror) and featuring Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven/Erin Brokovich) as executive producer, the film is described as "a universal story of friendship, rebellion and the irresistible power of gathered youth".

It also features an original soundtrack by  Keith McIvor (JD Twitch of Optimo) and is filmed in black and white.

BBC Scotland is kicking off a 90s season this weekend

What is Beats about?

Set in the summer of 1994, the movie follows the soon to be separated best pals 'Johnno' and 'Spanner', who have grown up together on a housing scheme in the West Lothian area.

The pair decide to spend their last summer together  by going to an illegal rave – a rite of passage for the UK's counter-cultural youth – which was being held before legislation was enforced banning outdoor raves in 1994.

The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act gave police the power to close events featuring music “characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats”.

Where can we see it?

Beats will be shown at cinemas in Glasgow such as Cineworld, Showcase, Vue, Odeon, Glasgow Film Theatre, Everyman's and the Grosvenor in Ashton Lane.
