New Enniskillen corner shop owner hoping to provide ‘community service’ to town

The owner of a new corner shop in Enniskillen says he is hoping to bring a unique type of community service" to ethnic communities in the Co Fermanagh town.

Pakistani man Imran Janjua first came to Northern Ireland more than two decades ago, and when he arrived to Enniskillen there were a lot of food products from home he couldn’t get his hands on.

After opening his own takeaway Chaska in the town in 2011, Imran has now opened a DayToday shop on Forthill Street, which will stock a variety of exotic spices and products which will help those from several communities in the area.

“There was a big demand from our community, those from the Asian, Arabic, Turkish communities,” Imran told MyFermanagh.

“If they need certain things they would normally have to go to Craigavon or Belfast.

“So it’s kind of like a community help or community service, we have everything that people from those communities would want.

“I know from running Chaska that a lot of my customers, if they want to cook anything ethnic at home themselves they will have to travel far to get them.

“As well as these communities local people can now get these products here and discover new ways of cooking.”

Imran moved to Northern Ireland with his wife 25 years ago, and in 2011 opened the Chaska takeaway in the Co Fermanagh town.

“We opened Chaska here in the town in 2011, I was born in Pakistan but I’m here in Northern Ireland for the last 25 years.

“I lived in a few different parts of Northern Ireland before deciding to come and live here.

“When I moved here I saw there was no speciality Asian shop here to cater for those people.

“There are a lot of different communities here in Enniskillen, you have Pakistani people, Indian people, people from Syria, the Philippines, China.

“Our aim is cater for all of these people.”
