New England Patriots going with Jacoby Brissett at QB

Jerod Mayo is a rookie NFL coach. He made a veteran decision for the New England Patriots at quarterback, opting for Jacoby Brissett over rookie Drake Maye as the team’s starting QB.

Maye was the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. The hope is that Brissett will carry the team through the season, or at least part of it, while Maye learns on the sidelines.

“We have decided, or I have decided, that Jacoby Brissett will be our starting quarterback this season,” Mayo said Thursday. “In saying that, as an organization, we are 100% behind Jacoby. There is no ‘You got a guy right here, you got a guy right there.’ We’re 100% behind Jacoby.

“I feel like we’re all on the same page from an organizational perspective. There were a lot of factors that led to this choice. I think the hard part is thinking in the short term and the long term at the same time. As an organization, though, we feel like Jacoby gives us the best chance to win right now.”
