New Edinburgh African restaurant to offer 'bold leap into an uncharted cuisine'

A new eatery specialising in bringing the best pan-African cuisine to the capital has secured a permanent residence in a popular Edinburgh cafe.

Farin Road promises a “bold leap into an uncharted world” of cuisine when head chef Tunde Abifarin takes over the kitchen at Tani Modi on Hanover Street next month.

The menu, which brings together dishes “rooted in Sub-Saharan Africa,” takes inspiration from the continent, Brazil and the Caribbean for a “unique flavour experience”.

Chef Abi, previously head chef at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Hotel, said the line up would reinterpret “nostalgic African dishes featuring distinct flavours from [his] motherland”after previously experimenting with a series of pop-ups and private events across the city.

He added: “The vast Scottish larder tells an African tale.

"Farin Road finds its origin in the abundant Scottish larder, which is readily available to the kitchen.

"The team have taken a bold leap into the uncharted world of curating the cuisine of the African continent in a new way.”

The new residency will initially see Abi take over Tani Modi's premises from 5:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays initially, with hopes it could become a more regular arrangement.

Dishes are set to include jerk from the Caribbean, kachumbari from Tanzania, Agashe from Sudan, Chakalaka from South Africa and many more.

Diners will also soon be able to experience the innovative menu at home when a delivery option kicks off in the near future.

The residency gets underway from May 6. Reservations can be made here.
