New DWP boss to face questions on cost of living, benefits and support for disabled people

New Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Mel Stride, is set to face questions from MPs on November 30 in his first meeting with the cross-party Work and Pensions Committee, chaired by Sir Stephen Timms MP.

Peter Schofield, Permanent Secretary at Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will also be in attendance for the formal meeting from Westminster which members of the public can watch live on the official Parliament TV website from 9.15am.

Mr Stride is expected to face questions on his priorities for the rest of the Parliament, including how DWP plans to support people through the cost of living crisis. He is likely to be asked about measures announced in the Autumn Statement and issues around the benefit cap and the adequacy of benefit levels.

The Secretary of State is also expected to answer questions on topics relating to the Committee’s inquiries, including the cost of childcare and tackling economic inactivity, as well as Pension Credit, support for disabled people and his department’s commitment to transparency.

The Work and Pensions Committee looks into the policies and spending of the DWP, including benefits for people in and out of work, State Pensions and how private pensions are regulated.

It also scrutinises DWP’s public bodies and other regulators.

The session is scheduled to end at 11.30am.
