New Dumfries foodbank opens in prominent town centre location

A new foodbank in Dumfries has opened in a prominent town centre location.

The Lambros Charalambous Philanthropic Initiative was officially opened on Thursday inside the former Greyfriars which is now the Cathedral Church of Our Lady and Saint Ninian.

A spokesman for the initiative said: “The LCPI has been founded to work for the people of Dumfries and beyond, in conjunction with the Orthodox Church for the aid and relief of all mankind.

“Our goal is to help to alleviate suffering and want in the communities in which we work. Our inspiration is the Church’s commitment to the Works of Mercy, and our example is the life and memory of our late patron Lambros Charalambous.

“Today our primary means of outreach in Dumfries is through our new foodbank, and our bursaries for young musicians.”

The foodbank was officially inaugurated with the Provost of Dumfries, Tracey Little, and church representatives attending the event.

The Diocese of the British Isles took ownership of the landmark town centre building late last year from St Bride’s Anglican Church.

It is an old calendar Orthodox Christian diocese with missions throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland in communion with the International Synaxis of True Orthodox Churches.

All are welcome to become involved in the work of the LCPI.

Anyone interested in helping the efforts of the initiative or volunteering are encouraged to get in touch through the website metbritian.org/outreach.
