Ncuti Gatwa was awarded an honorary degree from his old drama school at today's graduation ceremony.
The Sex Education actor was honoured alongside Outlander's Sam Heughan at the ceremony to the delight of the graduating class. The Rwandan-born actor was raised in Edinburgh and went on to attend the RCS in Glasgow, graduating with a BA in acting in 2013.
Marin Alsop, the first woman to lead a major American orchestra, and celebrated composer, singer, songwriter Errollyn Wallen were also honoured at today's event. Principal of the RSC Jeffery Sharkey shared a snap on social media with Ncuti alongside Errolyn, and said it was 'wonderful to welcome' the pair for their honorary degrees.
Ncuti, is best known for his breakthrough role as Eric Effigong in Netflix hit show Sex Education, and is set to take over the role of Doctor Who from Jodie Whittaker next year. The 28-year-old actor was all smiles today in his cap and gown, posing beside a street sign that read: "Twinned with Gallifrey," as a nod to his upcoming role.
The actor is set to take over from Jodie Whitaker whose final episode will air later this year, and Ncuti's run as the 14th Doctor will air in 2023. Fans are excited for what they believe will be the resurgence of the popular BBC sci-fi show, as iconic showrunner Russell T Davies is returning as well.
When speaking to Radio Times, Davies teased that he and the team have "immense plans" for Ncuti's run as the Doctor. He said: "I can't wait to talk to you about them but it's just not fair. Jodie [Whittaker's] there.
"She owns it, she's got a big finale in October and if we start nipping– we have to announce today because people would have found out about Ncuti whether we liked it or not, that's the curse of Doctor Who. You have to announce things in advance, but now we're going to shut up. 2023, you'll be sick of me. Talk to me in 23, that's going to be my catchphrase. F**king hell, that's dreadful."
