Plans have been submitted for one of the UK’s largest haulage companies to build a new office and welfare block at a Bootle docks to support its growth.
The proposals, submitted to Sefton Council by Merseyside Docks and Harbour Company on behalf of Maritime Transport Ltd, involve the creation of a purpose-built block to be a base of operations and rest facility for HGV drivers as the company seeks to grow its services at Hornby Dock, in the light of the area’s impending Freeport status.
According to planning documents submitted last week to the local authority as part of an application for permitted development rights, the company – which transports container cargo by road from the docks to across the UK, -the new building would house shower and restroom facilities for HGV drivers on the ground floor and offices for the company on the first floor.
A car park for staff is also included in the plans for the site, which is part of a larger unit that acts as a base and parking facility for up to 100 HGVs moving cargo from the docks onto the road network.

The building would replace an existing workshop on the site and create a permanent base for the company, forming part of a wider redesign to “improve and standardise its operational buildings across its UK network.”
The applicant adds that the new facilities would enable the company to expand its operations in Liverpool. a move which would in turn “support more goods being able to be transported from / to the Port of Liverpool and from / to the rest of the UK”.
In a report submitted by the applicant it adds that this would be “advantageous for the Port of Liverpool’s business operations”.
The application is currently open for comments and can be viewed online.
