New Destiny 2 weapon sound effect made with beef mac and cheese

A fan-favorite weapon in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is undoubtedly the Parasite grenade launcher, which uses beef mac and cheese sloshing about for its firing sound effect.

The fine folks over at GamesRadar took part in a group interview with Bungie audio lead Evan Buehler, who explains that much of Destiny 2’s soundscape comes from places you would never expect.

“With Parasite, the worm launcher, some of the sounds incorporated in there are sounds you might find in your house,” Buehler said. “I know if you’ve ever made some fresh pasta, specifically beef mac and cheese, and kind of mixed it around a little bit, some of those sounds were used to create that. Maybe not so great or weird, but it’s something you could experience or understand in your own home.”

One of The Witch Queen’s lead-up trailers showcases the Parasite, and you can briefly hear the gooey goodness below.

Goodness, it’s somewhat hard separating the mental image of cheesy pasta and burger meat squishing about a bowl every time the Parasite fires.

Buehler says that discovering how Destiny 2: The Witch Queen’s various fantastical elements, like the voice of the Hive Worm, is consistently challenging.

“That’s the kind of question we always have to answer with an expansion like this,” Buehler explains. “We’ll go, what does a worm sound like? A lot goes into that. There’s the voice actor who voices it, that’s a lot of the character that you hear. And then there’s a lot of audio processing that goes on that to sound a way, it’s kind of a collaboration between the processing and the acting to get it to sound the way we want it to sound. Our intention is to make it interesting and memorable when that worm speaks.”

Now we’re left wondering how often mac and cheese is in video games, unbeknownst to us all.
