An Ayrshire MP has visited the site of a new £8.97 million flood prevention scheme currently under construction in the region.
Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP, Allan Dorans, visited phase twof New Cumnock’s flood protection works to receive an update from the Ayrshire Roads Alliance and the main contractor, Wills Bros Civil Engineering Ltd.
The extensive project started in May 2021 and is already protecting residential and commercial properties near the Afton Water and River Nith.
The works include a combination of engineering measures with 900 metres of earth embankments, 1,200m of reinforced concrete walls and 600m of riverbank strengthening.
Phase two of the project, due to the extensive and complex nature of the work, has been split into six main work areas.
However, with shortages of concrete, in particular, it has led to an inevitable delay.
It is anticipated that the scheme will be fully completed by February 2023, just two months behind schedule.
Councillor Neal Ingram, cabinet spokesperson for community safety, roads and transportation and community cohesion, said: “It was great to welcome Allan Dorans and to receive a detailed update on phase two of New Cumnock’s £8.97m flood protection scheme from the Ayrshire Roads Alliance and our main contractor.”
Mr Dorans said: “I was delighted to receive a comprehensive briefing on the progress of the New Cumnock flood protection scheme this week from the Ayrshire Roads Alliance and the main contractors, Wills Bros.
“The work has been a challenging civil engineering project which has successfully overcome a number of significant obstacles including the requirement to divert a major gas main and other utilities.”
