A new CSI show is in active development at CBS, following the cancellation of CSI: Vegas. The recent installment, CSI: Vegas, took a serialized approach different from the original series. Despite solid ratings, CBS decided to cancel the show along with the dramedy So Help Me Todd.
CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach announced the new CSI show during a news briefing unveiling the network's upcoming 2024-2025 broadcast schedule. Details regarding the storyline and casting for the new show were not disclosed.
The decision to cancel CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd was influenced by a focus on reducing broadcast budgets. This budgetary consideration also led to the cancellation of NCIS: Hawai'i, despite its stronger viewership performance compared to the other two shows.
CBS has a lineup of new shows in the works, including a Matlock reboot, the Sherlock-connected drama Watson, a Young Sheldon spinoff, NCIS: Origins, and the sitcom Poppa's House.
Given the mixed results of the serialized approach in CSI: Vegas, it is speculated that the new CSI spinoff may return to the franchise's established formula of weekly cases in a fresh location. However, it may take some time before the new show debuts on CBS.
The series finale of CSI: Vegas is scheduled to air on Sunday, May 19 at 10 PM ET on CBS. The CSI franchise, created by Anthony E. Zuiker, has been a multimedia success with its original series and accompanying simulation-style video games.
