New Covid-19 rules facing Irish tourists as Lanzarote and Tenerife introduce restrictions

The Canary island of Lanzarote has introduced new Covid-19 travel restrictions which are sure to affect Irish holidaymakers looking for some early sun in 2022.

The island has moved to alert level 3 due to Covid-19 with only Tenerife higher at level 4.

With the EU Digital Covid Cert now in full effect, travelling across the EU has returned to some sense of normality.

But due to Omicron, some Irish holiday hotspots are seeing spikes in Covid-19 cases resulting in the introduction of some restrictions.

Here are the latest Covid-19 travel rules that Irish tourists will face if travelling to Lanzarote or Tenerife.

Lanzarote restrictions

The alert level 3 restrictions that Irish holidaymakers will face in Lanzarote include being asked to provide a Covid vaccination certificate to enter the following establishments, regardless of whether they are outdoor or indoor spaces:

  • Restaurants or hospitality and nightlife venues with a capacity of more than 30 people.
  • Events, celebrations and shows attended by over 500 people.
  • Cinemas, theatres and similar with a capacity of more than 30 people.
  • Gyms and similar venues.
  • Care homes and health centres or establishments when visiting and accompanying patients."

There are no restrictions on entering and leaving the island. You can only meet a maximum of six people from different households with hospitality having a curfew of 1am.

Gyms can only operate at 33% capacity and an appointment may be necessary, while public transport remains at full capacity.

Spas, jacuzzis and saunas are all closed but nightclubs remain open with 75% capacity for open-air and 40% capacity indoor

If you're looking to head to the beach, you'll want to be quick as they have a 50% capacity and a prior appointment may be necessary.

Tenerife restrictions

If you're looking to go to Tenerife, then there are even tougher restrictions in place as the island recently moved to alert level 4.

Both outdoor and indoor hospitality has a closing time of midnight with a maximum of 6 people per table.

A 75% capacity has been placed on public transport.

Beaches continue to operate at 50% capacity with shops and businesses having a 50% capacity for open-air and 33% for indoor.

Cultural events will have a 55% capacity while nightclubs are operating under 75% capacity outdoor and 25% indoor.

The alert level four rules are set to stay in place until January 20, when a review of the situation will take place.
