New coffee shop opens in Enniskillen - and you’ll need a ferry to get there

A new coffee shop has opened on an island in the town of Enniskillen - and those visiting will be able to hop on a ferry to get to it.

Activities company Blue Green Yonder has taken on a 25 year lease for Castle Island in the Co Fermanagh town. The coffee shop on the island comes with plans to develop the area into a multi use activity centre in years to come.

The company’s managing director, Caolan Faux, told Belfast Live the coffee shop was just the first of many big plans the group has for the island.

“We have a lease on Castle Island or Irvine’s Island as it was known, for the next 25 years,” Caolan said. “We ran a really successful Santa experience there last year.

“As we move into this year we are starting to develop it and it takes time. The coffee shop is one piece of it, but the centre has been in use since the 1990s.

“Various scouts and youth groups from across Ireland have come to stay on Castle Island. We’re going to have a campsite here and we will have canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding as part of a watersports offering.

“It’s a beautiful lush green island and we will have different pathways where people can sit down. People will be able to come and sit in or they can find one of the quieter areas on the island and relax and take in the views by the water and of Enniskillen Castle.”

Caolan added that the ferry to the island will be free for those looking to take the short trip over. It will depart from the jetty at Enniskillen Castle at regular intervals.

“The ferry is an integral part of it and it’s something that sets us apart from any of the other coffee shops in the town. You do have to cross a section of water, the boat is open air but will be more sheltered in the winter months too.

“It’s something that everyone seems to love and there’s no charge for getting the ferry across. We figured if people were coming in a large group it could make an expensive day out if we were to charge.”
