A new cafe has opened in Hamilton that aims to put every penny of profit back into the community.
Born and Bread in the Community opened to the public, on Muir Street, at the start of October.
It is run by Blantyre Community Trust in conjunction with Blantyre Soccer Academy, who since the start of lockdown have worked together to provide free hot meals daily for every child attending their holiday programmes, as well as supplying Christmas Day and New Year's Day dinners for families and people in need.
With this in mind, and facing an increasing struggle to receive funding to continue the meals, the Trust and BSA have invested in the cafe so that any profits made go towards continuing to feed less fortunate people across South Lanarkshire, as well as offering monthly cooking classes to allow people to learn how to cook tasty, healthy meals on a budget.
Lisa Mallin of Blantyre Soccer Academy has helped get the cafe up and running and told Lanarkshire Live : "It is becoming increasingly difficult for people and families in the community with the current cost of living crisis, so BSA decided to invest in the cafe to fund the community events and food we provide.
"Basically the way it works is that any profits made in the shop go directly back into the community to provide support to those who are struggling. In addition to this we will offer monthly cooking classes and some of the ingredients will be food bank supplies to show what can be done with whatever you have. Others will be budgeted meals for a couple of pounds.
"Ultimately we are there to help and support the community through any profits the cafe make. Running it in this way ensures the funding is continuing to come in to provide the help directly where it is needed."
Born and Bread in the Community is open Monday to Friday 8am to 2.30pm and Saturday 8am to 2pm.
