A new ‘bus gate’ will be installed on Heaton Lane in Stockport town centre — meaning only buses, cyclists, and taxis will be able to access the road from today.
CCTV cameras will be installed by March 1 to enforce the new regulations, with rule-breakers in for a penalty charge notice.
Stockport Council says the move will make Heaton Lane more attractive to walkers and cyclists, and will also allow buses to be removed from Mersey Square.
“Once the new Interchange has been completed, Heaton Lane will have a primary role as an access to the hub utilising the new bridge over the River Mersey in the town centre,” a statement from SMBC said.
“This will improve route planning and access for buses and remove them from Mersey Square.
“Only buses, cyclists and licensed hackney carriages will be permitted to travel down Heaton Lane past the new bridge over the River Mersey, at the junction of Astley Street.”
Cameras will be installed to stop eastbound traffic from the new bridge (Astley Street) junction travelling towards the A6.
Westbound traffic from the new bridge (Astley Street) junction towards the roundabout will also be stopped.
The new measures are not linked to the controversial Greater Manchester clean air zone, the council added.
