A new book, D-Day UK: 100 Locations in Britain, reveals rarely seen photos of the preparations for D-Day in Britain, highlighting the crucial role the UK played in the lead up to the historic invasion.
In the book, published this month to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, photos capture the intense training undertaken by soldiers and the remarkable air and sea operations.
Author Simon Forty, a military history specialist, shines a light on the years of meticulous planning that took place nationwide by the allied forces for the first time.
The book contrasts then and now images of 100 locations in Britain that were involved in preparations using black and white archival images with colour shots of the sites today.
The image at the top shows the Achnacarry commando training course in Scotland, where men from the American Rangers and Dutch, French, Belgian and Norwegian special forces trained.
Meanwhile, the image below captures the 4th Infantry Division troops marching past Torquay’s clock tower towards their embarkation point.
