New Bears running back D’Andre Swift goes way back with quarterback Justin Fields.
The pair played together at the University of Georgia in 2018, and they remain good friends to this day.
“Justin’s my guy,” Swift told reporters Thursday.
Swift was the first signing during the negotiation period of free agency, agreeing to a three-year deal worth $24 million, where he joins Chicago as the team’s new starting running back. But Swift admitted he hadn’t hasn’t from Fields since signing with the Bears.
It was certainly noteworthy considering the uncertain quarterback situation in Chicago. While the Bears haven’t made a quarterback decision yet, the expectation is Fields will be traded and Chicago will start over with a rookie, most likely Caleb Williams.
When choosing the Bears, Swift admitted the uncertainty at quarterback wasn’t a hindrance. He understands the NFL is a business and isn’t in charge of making those decisions.
While he didn’t say it outright, you have to imagine Swift would be a fan of his friend returning to Chicago this season.
“I’ve always been a Justin Fields fan,” Swift said. “From Georgia to when he was in high school once I first found out about him. I feel like he hasn’t even touched the ceiling of who he can be. I’m excited to see him keep going.”
