New Ayr United goalkeeper Aidan McAdams on why the David Hopkin factor lured him to Somerset Park

Aidan McAdams insists he was only heading one way when old boss David Hopkin came calling.

Last season's player of the year at Morton has become the fourth Cappielow star to move to Ayr United this summer.

And McAdams says the Hopkin factor will create a new dressing room spirit at Somerset this season.

The goalie, 22, told the Ayrshire Post: "When I knew of the manager's interest, I couldn't wait to get this signed.

"I know exactly what he asks of his goalkeepers and can only continue learning under him here.

"His backroom staff was another big factor in me coming as the chance to work a top goalie coach like Dave Timmins really appealed to me.

"I had a couple of other options in Scotland but having previously worked with the manager and having my breakthrough season under him, I knew I wanted to be with him again."

Former Rangers youth McAdams enjoyed a big season at Cappielow last term which started with Hopkin giving him the gloves.

The keeper went on to play over 30 times and despite Ton's scrap with the drop, he won a string of club awards.

Now he's setting his sights on racking up the appearances for Ayr after signing a two-year deal.

He added: "I'm delighted to get that bit of security in the deal and it will hopefully allow me to push on.

"Having played against Ayr last season, I know there are some right good lads here and the manager has added to that.

"I think we'll be very hard to beat this season – that's something the manager's teams always are.

"As a goalkeeper you want to concede the fewest goals possible and I've got a great defence in front of me who I know well."

Delighted Ayr boss Hopkin said: "I took Aidan to Morton last season and he was fantastic.

"He's a young keeper who's still only a kid at 22 and there were others in for his signature, so I'm delighted he's agreed to come here.

"He's someone I've worked with before, he's someone the players in front of him have worked with before, and that can only give us a solid base to build from.

"It's a positive step that the club has managed to get someone in who is our goalkeeper on a two year deal and it's great for all concerned."
