A new Apple iPhone upgrade has been downloading onto everyone’s phones - and there are quite a few differences. The iOS 16.4 update includes 21 new emoji, such as a pea pod, light blue heart and jellyfish, and voice isolation for cellular phone calls, which blocks out ambient noises to make your voice clearer.
There are a number of other improvements but anyone will need at least an iPhone 8 to get them as previous phones are not being supported by the update. Other handsets which will get he 16.4 update iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone SE (second generation onwards) and the new iPhone 14.
To get the update people need to open their settings and download the latest software upgrade. Perhaps the biggest change is the addition of 21 new emojis which include extra animals, hand gestures and objects.

Once installed you’ll find things such as Shaking Face and Pushing Hand along with a Donkey, Moose and a Goose. The upgrade also features new notifications from web apps that now pop up on the screen, improved voice isolation which blocks out background sound when making phone calls so you can be heard better.
Websites that are added to the Home Screen on an iPhone or iPad as a web app can send Web Push notifications in iOS 16.4. Apple made several updates to the Podcasts app. Channels access is available in the Library section, and Up Next now lets you resume episodes, start saved episodes, and remove episodes you want to skip.
For CarPlay, there’s now an option to pick up where you left off on a podcast with Up Next, or find new podcast options in Browse. It is a 1.9GB file so you might be best waiting until you’re connected to Wi-Fi before installing otherwise it might use up all of your mobile data.
This update includes the following enhancements and bug fixes:

- Voice Isolation for mobile calls prioritises your voice and blocks out ambient noise around you
- Duplicates album in Photos expands support to detect duplicate photos and videos in an iCloud Shared Photo Library
- VoiceOver support for maps in the Weather app
- Accessibility setting to automatically dim video when flashes of light or strobe effects are detected
- Visual Look Up is now available in South Africa
- Fixes an issue where Ask to Buy requests from children may fail to appear on the parent’s device
- Addresses issues where Matter-compatible thermostats could become unresponsive when paired to Apple Home
- Crash Detection optimisations on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models
