New Aldi store to be built next to Nottinghamshire retail park with Lidl and chippy

A new Aldi supermarket will be built next to a Nottinghamshire retail park. The new Aldi store will be built on undeveloped land to the west of The Becket Way, West Bridgford, after Rushcliffe Borough Council gave the plan approval.

It is expected the retail store would employ between 30-40 people, with both full and part time roles available. The proposed hours of opening would be 8am until 10pm Monday to Saturday and between 10am and 4pm on Sundays.

There would be 111 vehicle parking spaces for customers, which will include four electric vehicle charging points, seven disabled and six parent and child spaces. The proposal had initially faced significant opposition over concerns regarding highway safety.

Nottinghamshire County Council, the acting highway authority in the area, originally objected to the introduction of a four-arm mini roundabout on The Becket Way. In response, the applicant undertook significant traffic modelling and changed the site access arrangement from a four-arm roundabout to a simple priority junction, which the authority concluded was a safer arrangement for cyclists and pedestrians.

Objections were received from 51 neighbours, who argued there was no need for another food store, that green space should be retained, feared an increase in anti-social behaviour, and were concerned about the impact on highway and pedestrian safety. Nine neighbours made representations in support of the development.

The new Aldi store will neighbour the recently completed Wilford Lane retail park, which hosts a Lidl supermarket, PureGym, Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks, and Cod's Scallops chippy. The plan was given planning permission on March 9.

In a decision report, a Rushcliffe Borough Council planning officer said: "Not only would the scheme accord with the development plan as a whole, but the balance of material considerations also weighs in its favour. Consequently, it is recommended that the application be approved, subject to the proposed conditions."
