New abortion bill is drawing fire from both sides of the abortion fight

Political leaders who don’t often agree are lining up to oppose House Bill 300, which would add pregnant women to the list of people who can be prosecuted for an illegal abortion.

The day after it was introduced, state Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a Republican and candidate for governor, said he hopes the General Assembly doesn’t pass it. Cameron says pregnant women deserve support and life-affirming options.

Republican House Speaker David Osborne says the General Assembly has never passed a pro-life measure that didn’t include exceptions – and the House GOP caucus had never considered doing so.

Kentucky Right to Life’s executive director agreed, saying, quote, “We oppose any legislative and policy initiatives that criminalize women who seek abortions.”

The pro-choice group Planned Parenthood is on the same page, with the group’s executive director saying outrage is the only appropriate response to HB 300.
