New £8.5m Scots sports facility is on track to be a real winner

Stakeholders involved in the new £8.5 million athletics hub at Craigie in Ayr were given a glimpse of how the project is shaping up.

Councillors and representatives from a number of sporting organisations enjoyed a VIP tour at the much-anticipated site.

Ayr Seaforth Athletics Club, Ayr Rugby Club, Ayr United Football Academy, the University of the West of Scotland, Scottish Rowing, Scottish Athletics, Ayrshire College and Sportscotland were all represented on the tour.

Councillor Martin Kilbride – the buildings, housing and environment portfolio holder at South Ayrshire Council – said: “It was fantastic to get a tour of the facility. It’s really taking shape.

“There was a buzz of excitement from those in attendance, many of whom were heavily involved in planning the facility.

“I have no doubt it will exceed all their expectations when it’s finished later this year.”

The £8.5m council project, which is set to be completed in October, will feature some of the best sporting facilities around, with an eight-lane, 400m running track; six-lane, 60m indoor running track; and a field events area.

It will also boast a 3G all-weather pitch, along with fully accessible changing areas and a café.

Works are progressing well, with the changing block and indoor facilities nearing completion, paving the way for electrics to be installed.

Outside the building, the 400m track has been laid and lined, and contractors look set to start surfacing the access roads, as well as undertaking general landscaping.

On completion, the facility, which is located on the former college site next to Ayr Academy, will also have 120 dedicated parking spaces.

Councillor Brian Connolly, the council's sport and leisure portfolio holder, said: “This multi-use facility is key to continued sporting achievement in South Ayrshire.

“Not only is it set to become a first-class training facility, but thanks to the purpose-built, all-seated grandstand, we will also be able to host top-class sporting events and competitions.”
