Netherlands Manager Ronald Koeman Criticizes Steven Bergwijn's Transfer Decision

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman applauds supporters after a semifinal match between the Netherlands and England at the Euro 2024 soccer tournament in Dortmund, Germany, Wednesday, July 10, 2024.

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has expressed disappointment over Steven Bergwijn's decision to prioritize financial gain over his sporting ambitions by completing a €25 million ($27.6m) move to Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad. Koeman stated that Bergwijn's move to Saudi Arabia at the age of 26 reflects a lack of sporting ambition, contrasting it with the circumstances of Georginio Wijnaldum's move to a Saudi club in 2023.

Koeman highlighted that Wijnaldum's move was influenced by specific circumstances at Paris Saint-Germain, whereas Bergwijn's decision appears to be solely financially driven. The manager emphasized that at 26, the primary focus should be on sporting achievements rather than financial gains, acknowledging that players have the autonomy to make their own choices.

Bergwijn's transfer to Al Ittihad will see him join a team managed by Laurent Blanc, alongside notable players such as N'Golo Kanté, Karim Benzema, and Fabinho. Despite the lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, Koeman pointed out that Bergwijn had the option to remain at Ajax, suggesting that financial incentives were not the only factor at play in his decision.

Regarding Bergwijn's international future, Koeman indicated that the player's chances of representing the Netherlands have been significantly impacted by his move to Saudi Arabia. The manager hinted that Bergwijn's international career may be in jeopardy, stating that the 'book is basically closed' for him unless there are significant changes.

While acknowledging Bergwijn's right to make his own choices, Koeman expressed his disappointment at the player's decision and suggested that a move to a prestigious club like Barcelona might have been a more suitable career move. The manager's stance reflects his belief that sporting ambition should take precedence over financial considerations, especially at a crucial stage in a player's career.
